A special Armed Forces Day flag will be raised at Nelson Town Hall on Monday.

The flag shows Pendle Council’s support and appreciation for the contribution made by our Servicemen and women, past and present, and for the wider Armed Forces community of families, veterans and cadets.

Similar ceremonies will be held in each authority in Lancashire and at County Hall, Preston.

The raising of the flag marks the start of a week of celebrations culminating on June 29th with the Armed Forces Day national event in Nottingham, as well as hundreds of smaller gatherings across the UK.

Here in Pendle, Nelson and District Royal British Legion is holding a garden party at Holmefield House, Barrowford, on Saturday, June 29th, while celebrations will also be held at Colne Legion Club on Sunday, June 30th, where Debbie Wilson will sing songs from the 1930s and 1940s from 1pm.

Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire Lord Shuttleworth will be represented at the flag raising, along with councillors and council officers, representatives of the Armed Forces and the Royal British Legion and children from two primary schools.

Lord Shuttleworth said: “We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for their service. These flags are a reminder to us all we must not forget that debt.

“I am delighted every local authority in Lancashire will be receiving an Armed Forces Day flag from a member of the Lieutenancy and these will be flown across the county to honour the contribution of our Servicemen and women.”
