Challenge complete for tandem girls

It is a challenge they are never going to forget, and one that would have made one man in particular especially proud.

Best friends Amy Greenall and Emily Mitchell, both 25, completed a 127- mile tandem trek along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal over the weekend.

The pals came up with the unique idea following the death of Amy’s dad John, a business financial advisor from Fence.

John, described by his daughter as “the life and soul of the party”, was treated at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation after a large cancerous growth was found on his kidney. As a result Amy and Emily will be donating the £3,280 they have raised so far to the hospital.

Padiham Primary School teacher Amy, of Moore Street, Colne, said : “It went very very well — it was very hot.

“We did 80 miles in 12 hours on the first day and we did the rest in eight hours on the second day.

“We both thought that we wouldn’t be able to walk this week, but we are not suffering too much.

“The training definitely helped.”

Throughout the trek the determined duo were supported by a group of family and friends who provided picnic treats along the way.

Once in Leeds, the pair were presented with a bottle of champagne from their loved ones — a treat that Amy admits was gratefully received.

Amy added: “People loved seeing the tandem as we went past. We got talking to a lot of people.

“Some of the most challenging things about the ride was when we got to bridges and gates.

“ On a single bike we could have moved about a bit more.”
