A family event held in memory of two Colne men saw organisers reach the halfway mark of their fund-raising target.

The fun day, which took place at Colne Cricket Club on Saturday, was put on by Daryl and Jane Wright in a bid to raise money for a defibrillator for the Philip Wright Crown Green Bowling Academy.

The duo were driven to hold the fund-raiser in memory of their son and keen sportsman Philip, who died in a car crash in July, 2009, as well as Philip’s cousin and goalkeeper Craig Russell – who collapsed and died during a game at Sough Park back in 2007.

With the support of family, friends and the community, they managed to raise an impressive £500 from donations and activities, such as a tombola and raffle.

The remainder of the money is hoped to be raised at upcoming events, including a presentation evening and race night.

Mr Wright, of Alkincoats Road, said: “The event went very, very well. We are looking at having everything in place for the defibrillator next year.”

And in a joint statement, Mr and Mrs Wright said: “Our son, Philip Wright, lost his life that night but we are determined to keep the memories of Philip strong within the sporting arena in which he excelled – crown green bowls.”
