Former Reds striker Steve Cunningham was unveiled as the new Colne manager on Wednesday night.

The 33-year-old takes over from Nigel Coates, who spent over a decade in charge at the XLCR Stadium, before recently stepping down.

Cunningham has been assistant manager at Ashton Athletic and Padiham under Steve Wilkes, and makes the short trip across East Lancashire from the Arbories with Wilkes’ blessing.

Wilkes said: “Just want to wish my best mate Steve Cunny all the very best in his new adventure as Colne manager.

“He’s been brilliant for me these past few seasons.

“I’m both delighted and saddened to see him moving on because he’ll be a huge loss to both myself and Padiham Football Club, but a great asset to Colne football club. Great appointment!”

Cunningham’s assistant manager and chief coach will be another former Reds player Ted Cockett.

Existing coaches Dixon Lambert and Steve Petty will remain part of the backroom staff at the club, as will Phil Atkinson, the club’s sports therapist.

There was a lengthy meeting at the club on Wednesday evening when the new manager introduced himself to the players and set out his plans for the future.

Colne’s home game with Norton United on Saturday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

And the derby at Barnoldswick on Tuesday night will also be played at a later date due to Town’s rearranged West Riding Cup tie against Albion Sports.

The Reds’ next game is tomorrow at Ashton Athletic, kick-off 3 p.m.

On Monday, Colne Reserves host Stalybridge Celtic, kick-off 7-45 p.m.
