Barnoldswick’s Alex Szostack is expected to be a substitute tonight as Scotland take on New Zealand in their Rugby League World Cup quarter-final in Leeds.

The 27-year-old second row forward, a former West Craven Warriors player, came on after 40 minutes for Brett Phillips in last Thursday’s 22-8 win over the USA at the AJ Bell Stadium, Salford, having not made the 17-man matchday squad for the 26-24 campaign opener against Tonga at Derwent Park, Workington on October 29th, or the 30-30 draw with Italy on November 3rd at the same venue.

Szostack has played professionally for Keighley Cougars, Bradford Bulls, Villeneuve Leopards and his current club Sheffield Eagles.

His daytime job, after qualifying in Biomedical Science at Leeds University, is as a genetics scientist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Alex and girlfriend Kelley also have a vintage clothes stall on Barnoldswick Market called Ippy and Bob’s.
