Shayne Singleton’s New Year ambition

COLNE light welterweight Shayne Singleton is hoping for New Year honours after extending his perfect professional record to 11 wins at The Muni on Friday night.

The 22-year-old won every round to easily outpoint journeyman Johnny Greaves over four rounds.

And after a brief and deserved break over Christmas, “The Pain” intends to hunt down his first title in 2012 - with Area and Masters belts in his sights.

He said: “I’ll just see how it goes now, I may have another fight towards the end of February at Bowlers in Manchester, and then hopefully there will be a title fight for me.

“If I get the call to go straight in for a title, obviously I would do that, but we’ll see what happens.

“But I’ve had a great year, I’m still unbeaten, and hopefully people are taking notice.

“I need to step things up now, face more challengers and get higher up the rankings and hopefully the bigger fights will come.”

Singleton had been due to fight for the International Masters Light-Welterweight title against holder Michael Frontin, but cracked two ribs sparring with former British light-welterweight and welterweight champion David Barnes in November, and only took Friday’s fight at a fortnight’s notice to keep himself ticking over.

“There was meant to be an international title fight for me, for this last show, he said. “But I suffered the injury and had to pull out. Hopefully that one will come again soon.

“I’m going to put my feet up for a week or so now, then get back at it.

“I don’t want to lose too much fitness over Christmas.”

Singleton cruised through Friday’s contest, careful to protect his ribs, against a game opponent who, himself, was a late addition to the bill: “It was quite straight-forward really.

“I stuck to my game plan to go in and box, and won every round.

“I just wanted to box him and not blow myself out having only been back in the gym a couple of weeks.

“It was a composed performance and I was very pleased with how it went.”

But he reveals he has passed over the chance to fight in the Prizefighter series as he looks for belts over financial reward.

Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sport’s eight-man tournament, televised by Sky Sports, is to host the light welterweights in February at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Due to fight are English and British title challenger Dean Harrison, English Welterweight champion Adil Anwar, Liverpool’s British Lightweight challenger John Watson and undefeated 20-0 rising star Tyrone Nurse - with a £32,000 prize for the winner.

Singleton had spoken of his aim to take one of three places left on the bill last week, but after careful consideration has decided against it: “I had a talk about it with my coach and promoter and felt it was better to go a different route.

“I want to look for titles now, rather than go for the money at such an early stage of my career.”

Singleton thanks his army of supporters for their typically noisy backing at a packed-out Muni on Friday night, and also thanks Intershape Gym.

Also on the bill at Colne, Clitheroe’s Luke Blackledge beat Dean Walker on points for his seventh straight win, and, in the fight of the night, there was a win for Burnley’s Lee Bennett against Andrew Patterson.
