the mother of Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson has lost the tip of a finger after she was bitten by a dog while delivering election leaflets.
The incident occured on Tuesday while Mrs Ann Stephenson was delivering Conservative local election leaflets on The Crescent in Colne.
She was treated at Burnley General Hospital and is now at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, awaiting a skin graft.
The MP said: “It seems the dog bit so hard it broke the bone in her finger, as well as biting the nail and tip off, so she is being kept in for a few days.
“My mum would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Burnley General Urgent Care Centre for the excellent care that she was given and the Age UK volunteers at the hospital.
“There was no warning sign on the gate or the door of the house in question and I believe this is the second time a dog at this property has bitten someone delivering leaflets.
“I have been critical of the law relating to dangerous dogs a number of times before, which I believe fails to protect the public.
“Indeed I called for changes in the law in February after meeting the Police Federation, the National Dog Warden Association and the RSPCA.
“Something must be done to protect the postal workers, volunteers and the public from dangerous dogs and remind owners of their responsibilities.
“I would like to thank everyone who has sent my mother their best wishes for a speedy recovery.”
