VOTERS in most parts of Pendle go the polls tomorrow to elect 17 new Pendle councillors.

Roughly a third of the 49 seats on the hung council are up for grabs, with elections taking place in 16 of the 20 wards.

There are two elections in Colne’s Boulsworth Ward following the resignation of Coun. George Askew, while there are no polls this year in the single-member wards of Blacko and Higherford, Foulridge, Old Laund Booth and Higham and Pendleside.

The Conservatives - currently the largest party - will defend six of their 18 seats, Labour five of the 16 it holds and the Lib Dems four of 12, while the BNP will bid to hang on to one of its two seats in Marsden Ward, Nelson. The other seat being vacated is in Barnoldswick’s Craven Ward, where Independent Coun. Glen Whittaker is not standing for re-election.

Polling stations open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m.

The election count begins at Pendle Leisure Centre at 9-30 a.m. on Friday. Results will appear on this site as they are announced.
