Historic treble for McGregor

IT was Finals’ Week for the ladies at Nelson, with Jane McGregor going for the treble.

Last Tuesday, in the Ladies’ Trophy singles handicap matchplay, McGregor beat Kate Dennis.

Then on Friday, in the Ladies’ Doubles Matchplay Final, with Lynne Grandfield, she again took on Dennis and Betty Dixon.

Dennis and Dixon made a spirited fight back on the back nine, but Grandfield and Dennis managed to hold on to win for the fifth time in the 10 years of this competition.

On Saturday, in the Ladies’ Club Championship singles scratch matchplay, McGregor played Stella Newton.

Both ladies played extremely well, but McGregor won and managed the first championship treble.

On Gents’ Finals Day, the Captain’s Prize was won by J. Duckett from N. Thomas.

The President’s Prize went to C. Waddington from D. Cryer, and the Seniors Matchplay Championship saw I. Brennan beat N. Thomas.

The Fourball Championship was won by D. and C. Clarkin from C. Brindle and A. Fothergill.

The Junior Championship was won by Joe Flannagan, with Ben Ross runner-up.

• GHYLL Golf Club members played for the Nelson Trophy on Sunday, and Liam Bowditch (74-8-66) took the honours.

Category winners were, in Division One, Steve S. Mortimer (74-5-69), Division Two - Jimmy Hunt (84-12-72) and Division Three Bob Presland (92-22-70).

On Saturday, the juniors played for the Derek Turner Memorial Trophy, and with 37 points in a card play-off, the winner was Archie Paxton, with Matthew Dowbiggin second.

• AT Marsden Park, the men competed in a Medal Final and Muppets Cup.

Russell Binns (74-10-64) won the Medal Final from Paul Timberlake (78-11-67), who was second on the card from Steve Green (78-11-67).

Best gross, on the card, was Nathan Lingard’s 74.

The Muppets Cup was won by Martin Horsfield (75-7-68) after cards, from Larry Shaw (78-10-68), and Kingsley Thornton (83-15-68).

The ladies’ September Pendant went to Janet Kelly (97-19-78) after a card play-off with Eva Pinder (98-20-78).

Third was lady Vice Captain Michelle Lingard (104-23-81).

The junior Kings Cup was won by Tyler Baxter (93-17-76) from Jake Proctor (114-36-78).

• SATURDAY at Colne saw the first 18 holes in the 36-hole Foulds Cup competition.

Leader at the halfway stage is Peter Little (79-12 -67), second is Brian Earnshaw (73-6-67) and third Howard Proctor (84-15-69).
