Barnoldswick’s famous beach is back again for the month of August and is bigger and better than before.
Twenty tons of sand have been delivered ahead of tomorrow’s big opening day which has seen Barnoldswick Town Square converted into the best urban beach for miles around for the fourth year in a row.
Favourite attractions returning for 2013 include donkeys Joe and Ted and the surf machine.
But new for this year’s entirely volunteer-run attraction is the beach’s first disco aimed at tots and youngsters while a lifeboat will also launch.
The Hope Barlick church group will be providing activities for children on Mondays and the Gisburn Road Children’s Centre on Thursdays.
In 2012, the beach saw unprecedented levels of demand from sand-seekers flocking to the town.
Volunteers hard at work in setting up the sandy cove this week are anticipating similar interest this month.
Coun. David Whipp said: “The beach is going to be operating from this Saturday until August 31st, so a slightly longer period than previously.
“The beach disco should be interesting and we are really looking forward to the next four weeks.
“It’s regarded as the best urban beach by people who have visited and the fact nearby towns are trying to emulate what we have is the highest form of flattery.”
It is open Monday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm, but closed on Sundays and the Bank Holiday Monday on August 26th.
