RECENTLY Nelson Wheelers joined North Lancs Road Club, Preston Cycling Club and Rossendale Road Club on a training holiday to Majorca.

The trip is an annual event where the riders complete around 500/700 miles.

Each day, two groups ride to one of the island’s attractions, including the mountain climb to Soller. The group was based in Cala Bona and had access to most of the island. The Majorcans treat cyclists very well and make the trip a safe and enjoyable experience.

The Nelson Wheelers Circuit of the Dales time trial was then undertaken. A full field of some 120 riders took part, including professionals, sponsored and amateur riders. The course is 50-miles long and follows a route from Ingleton to Sedborgh, over to Hawes then back to Ingleton via all the main climbs. The event is deemed as one of the best and most arduous races on the time trial calendar. The event was won by Richard Handley with a time of 1:55:38, and Nelson Wheelers had three riders, with Ian Wilcock bringing them home with a time of 2:32:33. Craig Wilson was next with 2:51:24, followed by Dave Higginson 3:02:37

Last week attention fell on the World Track Championship in Australia.

Steve Burke from Colne was part of the four-man team pursuit and won a gold medal and world champions’ jersey.

Not only did the team win the event, they broke the world record doing so. The teams performance now puts them in a strong position for a gold medal at this year’s Olympics in London.

On Wednesday, at 7 p.m, the club evening league 10 mile weekly time trial starts.

The course sets off from Kildwick past Skipton to the roundabout then returns to Kildwick.

This is a great event to start the sport of time trialling and you can put yourself up against some of the best short distance time triallists in the country. New riders are welcomed and can attend at the start, sign on and race. Details can be found on the club website or by contact with any of the clubs officials. Results from this race go towards a club competition and results will be published.

The club also promotes weekly training rides which members can attend and are usually arranged via the club forum. These rides can be tailored to meet the needs of all the riders.
